I grind my teeth at night, is there anything I can do?

Prolonged teeth grinding and jaw clenching – known as bruxism – can result in worn teeth, headaches, and earaches.

Bruxism occurs subconsciously, often during sleep. Sleep conditions, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (in which your natural breathing patterns are disrupted), have been linked to incidences of bruxism, as well as stress.

Bruxism may not be permanent; however, episodes often occur during times of great anxiety. Sufferers are also prone to overly clenching their jaw when concentrating particularly hard while awake.

The anti-wrinkle medication injected into the jaw area can relax the muscles and effectively treat the condition.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure is quick and can be done as part of a 15-minute appointment.

What does the procedure entail?

There is four injections total, two on each side, directed straight into your masseter muscle.  You can feel this muscle along the side of your jaw when your teeth are clenched; it controls chewing and raising your jawbone. But when it’s in a constant state of tension, you may spend many mornings waking up to headaches, jaw pains, and (eventually) Swiss cheese molars, none of which are a perfect time.

How long does the treatment take to come into effect?

The anti-wrinkle medication works by blocking signals from your nerves to the muscle and partly paralyses the muscle’s strength, which means the function of the muscle itself is reduced.  When you’re not able to use it as strongly, clenching is reduced. However, it can take up to 14 days to start working to its full effect.

What are the benefits of anti-wrinkle medication to the masseters?

The benefits should be noticeable: you will stop clenching your jaw, grinding your teeth, fewer headaches, aches, and pain in the jaw.  An additional benefit may be a slimmer appearance to the jawline and face.

How long will the results last?

The results will last between three to six months, depending on how strong the muscle is and how often you use it.
